July 21: Aboard the M/V Kennicott

We were aboard the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry M/V Kennicott all day. There was one port call (Yakutat) but it was at 6:00am. Since we have an inside cabin (pictured below) we didn't see the sunrise and woke about 8:00am, long after the Yakutat stop.

We both have four-berth cabins as that was all that was available when we made the reservations. They have some tiny cabins on this ship. I saw one and it looks like they just stuck a twin bed in a broom closet. You don't even get a private bath.

The weather hasn't been conducive to any pictures today. Lots of fog and drizzle patches. The seas have been relatively calm; I don't see anyone running around with a barf bag.

They only have a "food court" on this ship unlike the M/V Columbia which had both a dining room and snack bar. However, the food seems better - they cook omeletts and pancakes to order for breakfast and prepare entrees to order for dinner. We had king salmon tonight. Prices are OK and more than passable when you don't have to tip. I do think that I'm putting on some weight since there isn't a place to exercise save for walking the deck in the rain.

We arrive in Seward at 3:30pm tomorrow and then ride to Anchorage. There is a three-hour stop in Valdez before that. However, we get there at 3:00am so I doubt we'll even see the place at all.
