July 29: Whitehorse, YT to Watson Lake, YT

274 Miles

The Beez Neez turned out to be more restful than I expected. Having five guys racked on bunk beds in a single small bedroom didn't look promising. I figured the snoring alone would keep me up all night. But Tom woke me at 7:00am when he climbed down from the top bunk and I realized that I had slept pretty well. We had breakfast at an organic coffee shop (most of us didn't like the pasteries), hunted around for a Honda shop in a comedy of confusion that I won't detail here, and left Whitehorse about 10:00am.

The ride from Whitehorse to Watson Lake was easy and very pleasant. The road was excellent with none of the frost heave patches that we experienced the day before. The mountains and spruce forests were outstanding. We saw lots of rain patches but we missed all of them until just as we approached Watson Lake.

At Johnson's Crossing (see map) we ran into a group of people who were bicycling to Anchorage from Austin. There were four of them and I spent some time talking to the woman, who was a UT student. They were raising money for a cancer research organization (it wasn't one that I had heard of) and each had to raise $3000 before starting the trip. They left Austin on June 1 and were about 800 miles from Anchorage when we ran into them. She didn't even know how she was getting home from Anchorage! It put the minor difficulties of our trip into sharp perspective to think what these dedicated people were doing.

Note: After we returned home, this article about their trip appeared in the Austin American-Statesman.

Since rain was threatening we decided to hole up in a motel in Watson Lake rather than camp. Naturally, it didn't rain again.
