July 14: In Seattle

7/14/2004

Today had little Zen but was very much about the art of motorcycle maintenance. We all took our bikes in for service at I-90 Motorsports. I got away with an oil change and a new front tire, both expected. Clif and Charlie had major scheduled service and they tried (apparently unsuccessfully) to find the source of Marty's intermittent wobble. Tom arrived from Connecticut on Tuesday night. He rented a Gold Wing but it needed tires and some other work so he spent a lot of time in the shop as well. Along the way, I found a camera shop and the camera seems to be working reliably now. Just some quick pictures from today, though.

I went to the airport to pick up Jane (shuttle bus, not motorcycle) whose flight was actually a few minutes early. It was soooo good to see her! We spent the afternoon walking near the motel (there is an Ikea store and one of the country's largest motorcycle dealers nearby). In the evening, we went up to north of Seattle to have dinner with my college friend, Steve Morrow, and his wife, Tresa.

I never noticed it on my previous visits here (probably because I wasn't driving), but Washington uses George Washington's bust as their road symbol. I guess the shape of the state was too boring or something. Anyway, George's head always has a number in it, as if he's playing some sort of "guess a number between 1 and 999" game. Very strange. ;-)

Another phenomenon is that we are tapping into wireless connections in practically every hotel. I paid for T-Mobile access at Starbucks, Kinkos, and Borders but have hardly needed it. We just plug in our wireless cards and find an open network in the motel.
