July 22: Seward to Anchorage

118 Miles

We started the day still aboard the M/V Kennicott. The rain and fog of last night persists. The swells were a bit bigger and whitecaps were easily visible. It was an experience just trying to walk with trays of drinks through the food court. It's getting more calm as we get out of open water. We are going through some narrow areas but can barely see the trees and mountains.

We slept well and weren't awake for the 3:00am-6:00am port call in Valdez. From the large number of unfamiliar faces and crowding in the lounge, it looks like a lot of people got on there. I'm sure that Jane will be happy to get out of the top bunk and into a nice bed at the 15 Chandeliers B&B this evening.

We arrived in Seward at 3:45pm, about 15 minutes behind schedule. Jane left via the passenger exit and headed for the bus depot. It seemed to take forever before they signaled that we could get to the motorcycles. Marty & I got loaded up. The steel decks and ramps on the ferry were wet and it made for some scary moments trying to get the bikes off. We each almost dropped our bike once.

Once off, it was a steady downpour of rain but our rainsuits worked well. We headed out up the Seward Highway (a scenic byway) to Anchorage. The rain kept up for about the first half of the trip. We arrived in Anchorage and only had a little bit of trouble finding the 15 Chandeliers B&B (a street sign was missing). Clif, Tom, and Charlie were already there as well as Janice. Clif went to pick Terry up at the airport while I waited to hear from Jane.
