July 31: Fort Nelson, BC to Grande Prairie, AB

362 Miles

We completed our traversal of the Alaska Highway on the way to Grande Prairie, Alberta today. The ride was nice but not spectacular and the roads were good. We stopped in Dawson Creek, the milepost 0 point of the Alaska Highway, for pictures. We have now all completed the full 1422 mile length of the road from Delta Junction, AK to Dawson Creek, BC. I won't write a lot on the highway's history - you can look it up on the Internet if you are interested. It was built in 1942 to allow American forces to quickly get to Alaska in case of a Japanese invasion and was an engineering marvel at the time.

Now to the good stuff. I caused my first "bear jam" today. I spotted the bear pictured below along the roadside. Tom and I were riding together and we pulled off so that I could get the camera out. Charlie came along closely behind. By the time I had finished taking my pictures, there were RVs and other cars parked and taking pictures. That's what is know as a "bear jam". As you can see, this grizzly was large but totally unconcerned about the people watching and taking pictures. Still, it's never a good idea to get too close.
